Optogayte Automatic Microphone Noise Gate
The Optogate PB-05 is an automatic microphone gate unit which is based on the latest optical technology. The PB-05 is plugged between microphone and cable. It's equipped with an infrared sensor. The PB-05 senses if someone is in front of the microphone and will switch on the microphone. The distance can be adjusted between 15cm and 120cm with the help of a Trim Pot. The microphone will be switched off automatically if nobody is in front of it. A red status LED indicates if the microphone is switched on. The PB-05 works with 48 Volt phantom power. Condensor microphones can be used in connection with the PB-05. The phantom power passes the microphone. A small push button on the top allows the user to toggle between "Mic On" and "Optogate Enable". The PB-05 is ideal for lead and backing voval mics, acoustical instruments and talk back mics. The PB-05 ist the best and easiest solution for the most common problems in live applications. It eleminates unwanted backgound noise of other instruments into unused microphones on stage. So, the clarity of the mix and the dynamics will be increased due to less phase cancellation and backgound noise. It reduces the possibility of feedback from unused mics.
Optogate automatic mic gate Features:
- Turns off your mic automatically via infrared when you are not using it!
- No false audio triggers!
- Set the distance and go!
- Eliminate unwanted sound from going to your mix, monitors, and mains!
- Excellent for in-ear monitors and very loud stage environments!
- Your sound will be better than EVER before!
- Your amps will sound better!
- Your ears and your Audiences will thank you! You will not be able to live without it anymore.
The PB-05 Automatic Mic Noise Gate is availabe in 3 versions.
- PB-05M - has an attenuation of -42 dB in the "Mic Off" position.
- PB-05D dims the signat at -16 dB, what is sometimes more audible for in ear applications, but doesnt completely mute the signal.
- The PB-05E is a cheaper version with the same performance of the "pro" models but works only with dynamic mics.

The Optogates work with 48V phantom power. Just switch on the 48V on the console and the Optogate is active. The phantom power passes through the Optogate and to the microphone. If you use dynamic mics you can "remote control" the unit with the phantom power switch. The microphone is switched on when the phantom power is switched off. Before turning on or off the phantom power please mute the channel in order to prevent switching noise.
You have already found 3 LED devices on one side, depending on what model you choose. The middle device is a red status LED. It indicates if somebody is in front of the unit and the microphone is switched on. The outer LED’s are the infrared transmitter and the receiver. The transmitter will send 16 pulses per second if the phantom power is switched on. The Optogate will switch the mic on if there is any signal reflected from a surface back to the receiver. The receiver uses a small code in order to reduce false triggering from random infrared signals on the stage like par cans, moving lights etc.
The distance from the mic to the performer in which the unit opens and closes is adjustable with the help of a 12-turn spindle potentiometer inside. On all units the distance will increase by turning the pot to the right for a maximum distance of about 4 feet and will decrease the distance by turning the pot to the left. Please be aware that some dark materials are not able to reflect infrared signals back very well, which in turn might decrease the distance. Please experiment with the potentiometer to fine-tune the distance together with the performer before using live. It also would be helpful to have your show lighting active while adjusting. The width of the sensor is about 15 degrees wide from the unit. The mic will be switched off if the artist moves out of this angle.
When you turn the pot to the left eventually you will hear a light click of a spring. You cannot overturn the pot. You are now at the shortest distance range. When you start to turn the pot clockwise, you will find that the distance range will change very slowly in the first few turns. After a few turns, the distance will change more rapidly until you reach the maximum range. If you turn the potentiometer clockwise (right) out of the useable area, the mic will be switched on completely. If this happens, just turn the pot slightly to the left until the Optogate works again.
We suggest that the engineer work with each performer to explain the operation of the unit and then set the range of the Optogate to fit his or her mic technique and stage set-up. As a rule the closer the performer is to the mic, the better the results will be due to eliminating the concert lighting variables.
The Optogates work well with dynamic mics and condenser mics up to 10 mA. You may find out that the switch off time of the indicator led can be a bit different from the real audio switch time depending of the mic type. A small pwm routine in the Optogate is responsible for it in order to prevent switching noise. The spindle pot will cover a wide range of mics. The distance range of the Optogate can change a bit when the ambient light changes. Like every other infrared device on the market the Optogate units do not work correctly if direct sunlight or other very high power infrared signals hits the sensor. That is in the "nature" of the infrared technology due to the random high power infrared spectrum in the sunlight. You can try it with your remote control of your home sound system. No infrared sensor of CD-players, TV’s etc. will work in direct sunlight. If direct sunlight hits the sensor of the Optogate the distance will decrease until the mic will be switched off. The unit will work again if somebody moves between the sun and the sensor. Normally you can use the Optogates on almost every open-air stage without any problems. It is always a good idea to check the range of your Optogates when changing venues, especially outdoors with direct sunlight.
If you would like to assemble a plastic clip on your PB-07 you can use a 4 mm screw up to 5 mm inside of the PB-07 case. Do not use longer screws as to prevent touching the connectors and damaging them.
If you use a console with less than 48V phantom power or if your condenser mic needs more than 10 mA then just send the Optogate to us and we will modify it to work with your equipment, without any cost.
The Optogate devices were developed for use with professional equipment and should be used by only professional system engineers and operators. Please be aware that we are not responsible for any hazards or damages due to the using of the Optogate devices. The Optogate devices are registered under the number DE54933725 WEEE as B2B devices. We also declare that they conform to the CE and ROHS for the European market.
Please do not use a PO BOX for any deliveries.
We cannot ship guitars to a PO BOX under any circumstances. Australia Post will not accept deliveries over 105cm LCM, we cannot change their policy.
Is this product in stock?

IF you are not home, the driver will leave a card in your mail box so you can pick-up from the local depot/post office or arrange a re-delivery.
We have found it to be much quicker & easier to have all items sent to a business address where someone will be present.
Can I ask for the courier to leave the goods at my door?
Whilst it Is possible, we highly recommend that you do not do it. All freight warranty & insurance will be void. Only do so at your own risk, if someone steals it, Musos Corner & The freight company will not be held accountable.
If you will not be able to take the delivery, it might be worth asking a friend or neighbour to take delivery of it for you.
What if it appears my goods have been freight damaged?
Please check all items before signing for them! This is very important. Do not sign for an item that appears damaged, to sign for them means "Signed for in good working order" and subsequently is out of the couriers hands, and voids insurance. If this was not possible, there can be a 24 Hour window to try and claim insurance, please contact us & the courier immediately. This only applies to orders that have paid for Insurance & are sent via courier.
Can the courier or delivery person call me prior to delivery?
Unfortunately as often as we request this, we get denied as many times. No courier or Australia post worker will call you prior to delivery despite any bribes we may try and offer.
If you select courier we will send you a tracking number which you can use to find out an estimated time of arrival for your goods, or alternatively have it sent to a business address.
Can I have my goods delivered on the weekend or after hours?
Unfortunately this is not possible at the current point in time, however you are welcome to pickup in store late night Thursday or on weekends from our Newcastle store. Please contact us to set a pickup time.
Do i need to set up my product?
All guitars come fully set up ready to play (after a quick tuning). Banjos will need to be set up after delivery as they cannot be shipped set up unless they are bought with a case. Some products like piano stands require some basic assembly as they are flat packed for shipping. Digitial pianos and clavinovas may require some simple assembly.
Are all products brand new?
Yes! Everything we sell, unless clearly specified, is considered brand new with full warranty. Some items, especially guitars will have been taken out of their boxes for inspection, demonstration or quality assurance. This in no way effects your warranty supplied to you by Musos Corner or Australian consumer law.
