Peluso Microphone Lab - 22 47 LE

Vacuum Tube Microphone with German Steel Tube, Microphone Power Supply, Cable w/ 8-Pin Screw-on Connectors, and Shock Mount packed in Wood Box and Flight Case

The Peluso 22 47 Limited Edition is styled after the legendary Neumann U 47.

Manufactured in the 1950s and 60s, the revolutionary sensitivity of the U 47 brought extraordinary detail to recorded sound. Remembered for its use by artists from Frank Sinatra to the Beatles, it is perhaps the most well known microphone of all time. This mic is an excellent choice for wide range of applications, from rock drums and guitar amps, to brass instruments and vocals. The LE is built with the highest quality modern components and designed to perform as the U 47 did when it was new. The U 47 was designed around its Telefunken steel-covered tube, and the LE employs a true vintage German 'EF' style steel tube manufactured between the 1940s and the 1960s. The 22 47 LE brings all the subtlety of tone, detail, and character of a vintage U 47, combined with the reliability and quiet noise floor required in the modern recording environment.

The 2247 LE has the additional feature of 9 polar patterns, controlled from the power supply. It captures the low frequency nuances of the original U 47 with smooth mids and balanced highs.

The microphone comes as a complete system including: 22 47 LE Microphone in a Wood Box, Power Supply, New-style 8-Pin Screw on Cable Assembly, and a Shock Mount all packed in a Flight Case.

The Different 22 47 Flavours

"John Peluso's company is currently offering three versions of the 2247: a basic model and two variations, the Standard Edition (SE) model and the Limited Edition (LE).

The LE seems to be about as close a copy of the original as it is possible to get, as it is fitted with a German 'Stahlröhren' Telefunken 'Steel Tube' VF14-equivalent valve, whereas the SE model uses an American Steel Tube equivalent, the 5693/6SJ7. While the former is, arguably, more 'authentic', it is noisier, and the latter uses a more easily available valve and is quieter. Both are metal-cased valves, rather than the more familiar glass-tubed designs. The third version of the mic is based on a modification of the original U47 design (introduced by the German radio broadcasters in the 1970s), in which the original VF14 pentode was apparently replaced with a glass triode valve, and the noise-floor improved as a result. This version of the 2247 apparently uses the 6072A dual-triode valve, which endows it with a self-noise figure of 12dBA — that's 3dB less than the original U47."

For this installment, we're diving deep into the world of studio microphones, exploring the massive range of ribbon, condenser and dynamic options on the market for savvy producers, engineers and project studio enthusiasts.

Peluso 22 47 LE

Catergory: Tube Condenser | Pattern: Cardioid

Key Features: The original Neumann U47 tube condenser is the most coveted microphone in the world. Buying a secondhand one will set you back more than $15,000. Buying it new is impossible because the last one was produced in the 60s. It is considered by many to be the ultimate vocal microphone, and numerous companies have stepped up to the plate to try and emulate the original. Peluso’s 2247 series microphones emulate the U47 as faithfully as possible.

While the SE version uses a lower noise American Steel tube, the LE version uses the closest thing to the original VF14 tubes found in the U47, the German made ‘Stahlrohren Telefunken' tubes to achieve the most faithful emulation humanly possible. If this isn’t enough to make you salivate, Peluso have also added the ability to choose between 9 (!) different polar patterns from the power supply. Weighing in at a full keg, the 2247 LE feels like a throwback of the golden age of commercial studios, where tubes ruled and recording engineers wore white. It certainly feels like five grand worth of microphone on display here. The overall quality of the craftsmanship combined with the general weight of the unit and accompanying mount bear all the indicators of the top end of town, with the same elegance and regal aesthetic of the classic mics of yesteryear.

With a whopping nine selectable polar patterns allowing for easy navigation between omnidirectional, cardioid, bidirectional, and even some intermediary patterns in between, it leant itself to all kinds of interesting experimentation regarding placement and polarity.

Mixdown Says: Singing into this thing is nothing short of revelatory. Sonically, the 2247 LE has all the tube warmth and pleasant response you may be familiar with if you have ever encountered a U47 in the wild, but the newness of the microphone and it’s components give it a crispness that takes it above and beyond. You can’t help but feel like this is what U47’s would have sounded like out of the box, back before they were vintage.

It’s often said that the lead vocal is where the money is and in thst regard, the Peluso 2247 LE has all the hallmarks of a classic Neumann sound, balanced and rich, yet at the same time open and natural. The 2247 LE produces some of the clearest, most honest sounding recordings you will find. It’s a sound that is strangely flattering despite it’s earnestness, almost like the veil has been lifted and you can finally hear yourself in true colour. The sound is universally flattering, and sounds good for all registers, standing front and centre, brimming with energy (probably courtesy of those awesome Stahlrohren tubes). The 2247 LE also serves as an awesome single room mic or overhead for the kit (especially in omni) and for mellow, vintage-y acoustic sources.

Overall: The 2247 LE is a masterclass in classic mic design for the modern era and a recording engineer’s dream to hold and use. I have already grown attached to it and will hate to see it go, but I’m just grateful for our time together.

Product Q&A

No questions yet. Be the first to ask the question!

Comparing the 22 47, 22 47 LE and 22 47 SE:

All of the microphones in our 22 47 line are styled after the vintage Neumann U 47. This legendary microphone was revered for its clear sound, smooth and warm mid range, balanced high end and great body. Neumann discontinued U 47 production when Telefunken ceased production of its metal VF 14 tube. Our 22 47 LE model is supplied with a German vintage steel tube from this era. We have worked for years to acquire and test a generous supply of these rare tubes. We are proud to offer a microphone with this true vintage tube. With our 22 47 SE model we are able to offer the same sonic quality with an American style metal tube. These tubes are available to us in larger quantities. This allows us to provide the sonic qualities of a ‘47’ microphone with a lower price. The only discernible difference in sound between these two models is a 2 dB quieter noise floor on the SE model. In the 1970’s German radio broadcast engineers began modifying their then-vintage U 47’s to incorporate a new glass triode tube.  The new glass triode tube provided a very quiet noise floor, and has less of the complexity and second harmonic content than the steel tubes provided. The Peluso 22 47 model is based on this glass tube modification. Carefully selected components, thorough testing, and attention to detail all come together making these some of our most popular microphones.

We certainly do, and highly recommend it as Australia is a big country. Insurance / Shipping protection is available and is only 1.5% of the value of the goods.

What if I am not home for the delivery?
IF you are not home, the driver will leave a card in your mail box so you can pick-up from the local depot/post office or arrange a re-delivery.
We have found it to be much quicker & easier to have all items sent to a business address where someone will be present.

Can I ask for the courier to leave the goods at my door?
Whilst it Is possible, we highly recommend that you do not do it. All freight warranty & insurance will be void. Only do so at your own risk, if someone steals it, Musos Corner & The freight company will not be held accountable.
If you will not be able to take the delivery, it might be worth asking a friend or neighbour to take delivery of it for you.

What if it appears my goods have been freight damaged?
Please check all items before signing for them! This is very important. Do not sign for an item that appears damaged, to sign for them means "Signed for in good working order" and subsequently is out of the couriers hands, and voids insurance. If this was not possible, there can be a 24 Hour window to try and claim insurance, please contact us & the courier immediately. This only applies to orders that have paid for Insurance & are sent via courier.

Can the courier or delivery person call me prior to delivery?
Unfortunately as often as we request this, we get denied as many times. No courier or Australia post worker will call you prior to delivery despite any bribes we may try and offer.
If you select courier we will send you a tracking number which you can use to find out an estimated time of arrival for your goods, or alternatively have it sent to a business address.

Can I have my goods delivered on the weekend or after hours?
Unfortunately this is not possible at the current point in time, however you are welcome to pickup in store late night Thursday or on weekends from our Newcastle store. Please contact us to set a pickup time.
