Fully-Functional Down-Sized Helix!

HX Stomp is a professional-grade guitar processor that delivers the sound of Helix® amps, cabs, and effects in an ultra-compact pedal. Whether you prefer to play through a traditional amp-and-pedal setup, or go direct onstage or in the studio, HX Stomp seamlessly integrates into a variety of environments and applications. Utilizing the same DSP and HX Modeling technology as its bigger Helix brethren, the HX Stomp guitar pedal nonetheless fits easily onto your pedalboard, or even in the pocket of your gig bag. There are over 300 amps, cabs, and effects—including a looper. HX Stomp contains all the same HX models found in Helix family products, as well as the legacy effects library from Line 6® M-Series pedals, and stompbox modelers such as the DL4. Use it as a "super stompbox," a backup or fly rig, an add-on tone expander when combined with other modelers, an audio interface—or even a complete guitar or bass rig.

Line 6 has unveiled the HX Stomp, a downsized version of its flagship Helix processor that features the same HX Modelling technology. That means, unlike this year's HX Effects, it can run all of the Helix’s amp models, as well as over 300 effects and models from its fully fledged brother. The unit itself is considerably downsized, packing three capacitive-sensing footswitches with colour-coded LED rings and a 320x240-pixel LCD screen. It’s still rammed with connections, though, with stereo ins and outs, a stereo effects loop, TRS dual expression input, headphone output, MIDI compatibility and USB. Guitarists can run up to six simultaneous amp, cab and effect blocks (including a looper and IR loading). Line 6 is emphasising the HX Stomp’s ability to function as an entire rig in a pedal - its diminutive proportions mean it can just as easily slot in to an existing pedalboard setup as serve as a convenient fly rig.

Quick Look

• Utilizes the same DSP chip and HX Modeling as Helix
• Compact yet extremely powerful
• Highest possible audio quality throughout, plus both true bypass and DSP bypass with trails
• Over 300effects and models from Helix, M-Series, and legacy Line 6 products
• Up to 6 simultaneous amp, cab, and effect blocks (including a looper and IR loading) provide extensive tone-crafting options
• A complete guitar or bass rig in one pedal
• 3 capacitive-sensing footswitches with color-coded LED rings facilitate ease of use and fast editing
• Split/parallel signal paths provide flexible routing for both simple and complex signal chains
• TRS dual expression pedal/footswitch input extends creative control capabilities
• Stereo effects loop (mono/stereo TRS send + stereo returns) facilitates use with other pedals

Standalone or amped operation

Like the full Helix boards, the HX Stomp makes a capable standalone fly rig. Add an instrument and a PA, and with the HX Stomp, you’ve got all you need to gig out. Onboard you’ll find all 200 amp, cab, and stompbox models from the Helix family, which can be custom-configured into six blocks and saved to any of 126 presets.

But this doesn’t mean you have to forego your traditional gear. The HX Stomp works great with your existing amp setup. It’s small enough to fit on a pedalboard, features true bypass switching to eliminate tone suck when used alongside other pedals, and even comes preconfigured for 4-cable amp setups.

Preset rigs sound surprisingly good without customization and come well organized. You can browse by instrument (guitar, bass, keys, or acoustic) and application (direct to PA, 4-cable amp setups, etc.) to cop instant inspiration for whatever mood you’re in.

Impressive I/O

You couldn’t tell it to look at it, but the HX Stomp is brimming with interconnect options. Stereo 1/4″ ins and TRS balanced outs equip this unit for low-noise stereo operation, whether you throw it on a board or inject it into a PA. An FX loop* gives you the option to run certain stomps (fuzz, drive, EQ, compression) into the front end of your amp and others (delay, reverb) after the preamp section. You also get MIDI in/out for traditional MIDI switchers, a TRS expansion jack for dual expression pedals and additional switches, and USB for computer-based patch management and firmware updates.

*Requires an FX loop-equipped amp

USB Recording

The HX Stomp is just as powerful on your studio desk as it is onstage. Connected to your workstation via USB, this modeler becomes a capable multichannel audio interface, with 24/96 headroom and clarity and re-amp capabilities to suit the choosiest players. With the HX Stomp, your gigging and recording tools are one and the same, placing all your favorite patches at your fingertips to fuel your creativity for late-night amp-less sessions.

The same HX Modeling technology that powers the flagship Helix guitar processorenables HX Stomp to run up to six processing blocks simultaneously, with pristine audio quality, making it the most powerful and flexible stompbox-sized multi-effects processor currently available. Along with over 300amps, cabs, and effects—even a looper—the HX Stomp multi-effects processor includes a legacy library of effects from Line 6 M-Series pedals, as well as from classic Line 6 stompbox modelers such as the DL4™, MM4™, FM4™, and DM4™. There are also presets created specifically for bass players, as well as individual bass amp and cab models.

Additional Features

Additional features include a choice of true bypass and DSP bypass with trails, a stereo effects loop for patching other pedals into the signal chain and 4-Cable Method setups, a jack for connecting two external footswitches or expression pedals, extensive MIDI control, IR (impulse response) loading capabilities, and a multichannel 24-bit/96kHzUSB audio interface. The free HX Edit app allows you to customize nearly every aspect of the pedal’s operation, create, save and load presets. It also provides preset librarian capabilities, IR loading, and more.

Control & Editing

Despite its tiny size, HX Stomp is easy to both operate and program, thanks to its simple but powerful controls, 320 x 240-pixel color LCD, and three capacitive-sensing footswitches with color-coded LED rings. External control via MIDI andoptional expression pedal and footswitch control provide additional flexibility, as does I/O that may be configured for sophisticated routing such assimultaneously feeding an amp and a FOH mixer, 4-Cable Method operation with an amplifier, and easy studio re-amping.

Audio Quality

An industry-leading 123dB of dynamic range provides tremendous depth and ultra-low noise, while the highest-quality components guarantee unadulterated audio throughout—from inputs to outputs—whether feeding an amp, going direct to FOH, or recording in the studio.

Rig in a pedal

Whether you need a backup for your Helix or other rig, a flyrig that will fit into a duffle bag with room to spare for cables and additional pedals, a convenient practice and rehearsal rig, or a complete guitar and effects studio recording setup—the HX Stomp multi-effects pedal provides the perfect solution. It even fits into the top pocket of a Helix Backpack.

HX STOMP FAQ

That thing looks small. Is it small?
Considering the amount of hardware inside, HX Stomp is practically microscopic—its footprint is smaller than a Line 6 M5 pedal, and pretty much identical to that of a three-switch Strymon. We spent a stupid amount of time and effort cramming massive power into a tiny chassis. It’ll even fit into the small top pocket on Helix Backpack.

Helix Backpack was out in 2015. That pocket was designed for HX Stomp all along?
Maaaayyybe?

Okay, we agree that it’s small, but what IS it?
At the risk of hyperbole, HX Stomp may be the most powerful and flexible compact stompbox ever made. It can replace multiple pedals on your board (so you have room for more!). It can act as the ultimate fly or backup guitar/bass rig—except it may provide enough simultaneous amps and effects to be your main guitar/bass rig. It can be used to expand the DSP/model set of existing pro modelers; throw it in your Kemper, Fractal, or Atomic’s effects loop to add all Helix amps and effects. It’s also a world-class portable guitar recording interface with digitally-controlled analog impedance circuits, zero-latency monitoring, multichannel re-amping, and headphone amp. (One might suggest it’s the perfect front end for the Helix Native plug-in.) HX Stomp is whatever you want it to be, wherever you want it to be.

How does it sound compared to Helix?
Aside from the maximum number of simultaneous effects and amps—six blocks total—HX Stomp sounds identical to Helix. They have the same effects, amps, cabs, IR loading, 24-bit/192kHz A/D/A converters, analog impedance circuits, and patented guitar ins with 123dB of dynamic range.

HX Effects is the same price. How is HX Stomp different?
HX Effects is designed to be the centerpiece of your pedalboard, giving you full control over individual Line 6 effects, your MIDI-equipped pedals, and your amp switching. HX Stomp is a programmable amps+cabs/IRs+effects stompbox that seamlessly integrates into a wide variety of environments and applications.

TL;DR: HX Effects is for amp and pedalboard guys, HX Stomp is for modeling guys… but amp and pedalboard guys might love it too!

What ins and outs does it have?
  • Left/Mono and Right 1/4” Inputs—switchable between instrument and line for use with passive guitars/basses, active guitars/basses, keyboards, synths, drum machines, electric nose flutes, and more
  • Left/Mono and Right 1/4” Outputs—balanced/unbalanced for feeding amps, FRFR speakers, or the front-of-house mixer
  • Stereo 1/4” TRS Send—with a Y cable, two separate mono effects loops (or one stereo effects loop) can be accommodated
  • Left/Mono and Right 1/4” Returns—globally switchable to act as an always-on Aux In for monitoring mixers or MP3 players
  • 1/4” stereo headphone out
  • 1/4” EXP 1/2, FS4/5 Input—can accommodate two expression pedals, two additional footswitches, one of each, or the Mission Helix pedal with toe switch (https://shop.line6.com/promotions/pedals/mission-expression-pedal-for-line-6-products.html)
  • MIDI In and Out/Thru
  • USB—for recording to/jamming along with Macs, PCs, iPads, and iPhones. (iPads and iPhones require the Apple Camera Connection Kit.) HX Stomp can feed both stereo paths into your computer—along with dry versions for reamping—simultaneously
  • DC In
Wait. How did you fit all that into something the size of two Tube Screamers?
Black sparkle magic.

I hate editing little pedals with screens. How easy is HX Stomp to use?
Very. WATCH THESE VIDEOS (around 10 minutes total) and you’ll be a master: line6.com/meet-hx-stomp
The full manual should be up shortly too: line6.com/support/manuals/hxstomp

How’s the build quality? Won’t you mess with the knobs when you stomp on it?
HX Stomp is built into a sturdy die-cast aluminum alloy case with the same footswitches and metal knobs from Helix. If you’re still worried, note that while in Play view, the four knobs closest to the switches are disabled.

How can I do anything with only three switches?
You can do a lot with three switches, but if you really need more, two additional external switches can be connected. HX Stomp also responds to a wide variety of MIDI commands, and any block or parameter can learn (or be manually assigned to) an incoming CC message. Plus, from the main Play view, you can press <PAGE/PAGE> or an external footswitch to select one of four footswitch modes on the fly.

Does HX Stomp have true analog bypass?
Yes. You may choose either analog bypass or DSP bypass with trails. To bypass everything press the upper and lower knobs together (or assign a footswitch to All Bypass).

Is there a Looper?
HX Stomp includes a mono or stereo 1 Switch Looper that can be placed anywhere in the signal flow.

Can it do 4-Cable Method?
Yes, and 7-Cable Method for stereo rigs. After hooking everything up, just add an FX Loop block to your tone; any blocks before the FX Loop will appear before your real amp’s preamp and any blocks after the FX Loop will appear between your real amp’s preamp and power amp sections. There are even 4-Cable Method presets to get you started. (Note the “4CM” presets won’t pass audio unless everything’s hooked up correctly!)

Is there an editor?
Yes. It uses the same HX Edit application as Helix Floor, Helix Rack/Control, Helix LT, and HX Effects, except with 126 presets and a simplified signal flow. Just update both HX Stomp’s firmware and HX Edit to 2.70. Both should be available very soon.

Can HX Stomp load Helix Floor, Helix Rack/Control, Helix LT, or HX Effects presets?
As long as the preset has six or fewer blocks, you can use HX Edit 2.70 (available soon) to access both devices at once and copy and paste blocks back and forth. Rebuilding a Helix preset in HX Stomp shouldn’t take more than 30 seconds.

Can HX Stomp presets be loaded into the Helix Native plug-in?
Not currently, but individual blocks can be copied and pasted between HX Edit 2.70 and Helix Native 1.70. Again, rebuilding an HX Stomp preset in Helix Native shouldn’t take more than 30 seconds.

I know a bunch of us wanted something smaller than Helix LT, but did you have to make it THAT small?
< disapproving side-eye >

From the beginning, we understood that for HX Stomp to navigate the widest ocean of adopters (pedalboard guitarists, traveling guitarists, bassists, buskers, keyboardists, producers, fans of desktop PODs, curious Pedalboards of Doom members who post anti-modeling memes, etc.), it needed to be extremely versatile and almost obnoxiously portable. That meant squeezing it into a tough-as-nails pedal—not a slightly smaller traditional floor modeler—yet never sacrificing any sound quality or what it means to be Helix/HX.

Yeah, but that honkin’ huge DC-3G power supply is like a third the size of the entire pedal!
The power supply is large, yes. To ensure the same signal integrity of its bigger brothers, we needed a burly power supply.

That said, these two seem to work just fine:
  • Strymon Zuma R300—Appears to work fine when doubling up TWO 9V outputs
  • Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 4x4—Appears to work fine when doubling up TWO 9V outputs
IMPORTANT NOTE #1: HX Stomp’s sophisticated circuitry pulls notably more than your average pedal. Hence, we used a DC IN jack with a larger center pin to sort of disincentivize people from throwing whatever at it. The stock DC cables that come with the power supplies listed above will NOT fit. Note that Eventide does the exact same thing with their H9.

IMPORTANT NOTE #2: YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. Feel free to use this FAQ as a starting point, but Line 6 is not responsible for any damage incurred when using HX Stomp with any third-party power supplies. That is, if someone writes "B-b-but Line 6 said I could use [power supply X!]," someone will hopefully refer them to this post where I make it perfectly clear that we only *officially* support our DC-3G.

Can HX Stomp run on batteries?
No.

The chassis gets a bit warm after a while. Is that normal?
Yes. HX Stomp isn’t a budget modeler—it’s a hardcore, professional solution with four circuit boards (one with 12 layers) crammed with serious analog and digital circuitry that happens to have been meticulously squeezed into a tiny chassis. It’s gonna put off a bit of heat. Totally normal.

If you connect all the jacks on the sides, it kinda looks like an octopus.
The most commonly used jacks are all on the back. Besides, octopuses are awesome. Have you seen them open jars?

Excuse me, but the plural of octopus is octopi.

Dimensions/weight?
Including the jacks, 7”w x 5”d x 2.5”h; 1.75 lbs.

IF you are not home, the driver will leave a card in your mail box so you can pick-up from the local depot/post office or arrange a re-delivery.
We have found it to be much quicker & easier to have all items sent to a business address where someone will be present.

Can I ask for the courier to leave the goods at my door?
Whilst it Is possible, we highly recommend that you do not do it. All freight warranty & insurance will be void. Only do so at your own risk, if someone steals it, Musos Corner & The freight company will not be held accountable.
If you will not be able to take the delivery, it might be worth asking a friend or neighbour to take delivery of it for you.

What if it appears my goods have been freight damaged?
Please check all items before signing for them! This is very important. Do not sign for an item that appears damaged, to sign for them means "Signed for in good working order" and subsequently is out of the couriers hands, and voids insurance. If this was not possible, there can be a 24 Hour window to try and claim insurance, please contact us & the courier immediately. This only applies to orders that have paid for Insurance & are sent via courier.

Can the courier or delivery person call me prior to delivery?
Unfortunately as often as we request this, we get denied as many times. No courier or Australia post worker will call you prior to delivery despite any bribes we may try and offer.
If you select courier we will send you a tracking number which you can use to find out an estimated time of arrival for your goods, or alternatively have it sent to a business address.

Can I have my goods delivered on the weekend or after hours?
Unfortunately this is not possible at the current point in time, however you are welcome to pickup in store late night Thursday or on weekends from our Newcastle store. Please contact us to set a pickup time.

Send to a PO BOX?
We cannot ship guitars to a PO BOX under any circumstances. Australia Post will not accept deliveries over 105cm LCM, we cannot change their policy.

Do i need to set up my product?
All guitars come fully set up ready to play (after a quick tuning). Banjos will need to be set up after delivery as they cannot be shipped set up unless they are bought with a case. Some products like piano stands require some basic assembly as they are flat packed for shipping. Digitial pianos and clavinovas may require some simple assembly.
