Ear Plugs & Hearing Protection

The biggest and best range of ear plugs Australia has to offer

Hearing protection plays an important part in the music industry — being able to hear is a must for musos, DJs, music producers and stage crew members alike — but research suggests that between 30% and 50% of musicians end up with hearing problems like tinnitus, a hearing condition where a ringing or buzzing noise can be heard almost constantly.

Ever been to a concert and felt like your ears are blocked, ringing or buzzing on the way home? That’s a mild form of tinnitus that tends to go away on its own. Long-term exposure, on the other hand, can lead to permanent, more serious hearing damage which is why it’s important for members of the music industry to protect their hearing.

Here at Musos Corner, we want to see musos continue to love music and keep rockin’ for a lifetime, so we stock a massive range of ear plugs and protection products to prolong hearing health.

We’re one of the leading suppliers of ear plugs in Australia— browse through our collection and shop online for fast and affordable shipping, or free shipping on orders over $199. Alternatively, come and see us in-store in Newcastle — our team can find unique hearing protection to meet your needs.

Quotes from famous musos that scream “you should have worn ear plugs”

“I made 'Harvest Moon' because I didn't want to hear any loud sounds. I still have a little bit of tinnitus but fortunately, now I'm not as sensitive to loud sounds as I was for a year after the mixing of 'Weld’. My hearing's not perfect but it's okay.”

— Neil Young

"I suffer from permanent tinnitus… which means I've got this constant ringing in my ears which has also made me somewhat deaf (or 'conveniently deaf,' as Sharon calls it). It's like this Whee! noise in my head all the time. Should have worn ear plugs, I guess."

— Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath

“At the time, I was recording in the States and had spent the day singing in the studio. Then I collected my daughter from school. We got home, had something to eat, played a video game. Then suddenly my ear went sssssssshh. Within a second, my left ear simply closed down as if I had been underwater. I tried to clear it by pinching my nose but it made no difference. I thought it would sort itself out… but it didn’t."

— Phil Collins, Genesis

“I started using Fender Deluxe Reverb amps and 50-watt Marshalls around '97 after I started having some problems with tinnitus. It was my own doing — being irresponsible and thinking I was invincible... Yes, though it has been better lately. Take care and wear plugs.”

— Eric Clapton, Cream

“Looking after your ears is, unfortunately, something you don’t think about until there’s a problem. I’ve had tinnitus for about 10 years and since I started protecting my ears, it hasn’t got any worse — touch wood — but I wish I’d thought about it earlier. Now, we always use molded filter plugs or in-ear monitors to try to protect our ears.”

— Chris Martin, Coldplay

Ear plugs and protection for live gigs

Whether you’re recording in the studio, rocking out on stage or heading to a massive concert, hearing protection is absolutely essential. Live gigs can reach up to 120dB for hours on end, whereas the safe range is 80dB or lower — and according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), around 1.1 billion people were at risk of hearing loss due to loud music venues and listening devices.

If you’re looking for high-performance ear plugs for gigs, we recommend the Alpine Music Safe Pro Ear Plugs. Specifically made for musos, these are the only ear plugs that come with three interchangeable filter sets for low, medium or high protection. Thanks to the selective absorption of noise, the Alpine MusicSafe Pro Ear Plugs provide the best protection against harmful noise levels while preserving excellent sound quality.

Depending on where you are on stage and what kind of music you’re playing, you can choose the level of protection that suits you the best.

If you’re working behind the scenes at a gig, you might want something more comfortable and reliable for when you’re lifting and moving gear, or even working security behind the barricades. The same goes for drummers — no one wants their ear plugs falling out in the middle of a drum solo.

In this case, we recommend the Alpine MusicSafe Earmuffs — these earmuffs muffle 25dB of sound created when playing the drums, so you can bet they’re reliable for a huge range of scenarios. Complete with a comfortable headband, you’ll soon forget you’re wearing earmuffs and be able to focus on the task at hand.

Not sure whether ear plugs or earmuffs are necessary? You can test the waters with the Lutron Sound Level Meter! This bad boy has a dB reader and lights up with a warning for over and under loading.

We’re committed to protecting the hearing of musos, roadies, members of the stage crew, spectators, music producers and more — find protective ear plugs and earmuffs online with Musos Corner!

Hearing protection for DJs

While Ozzy Osbourne is almost expected to have hearing loss after a decades-long career delivering face-melting metal performances worldwide, DJs are often overlooked when it comes to hearing protection. Between monitors, stage speakers, headphones and crowds, DJs get an audio workout at every gig.

With this in mind, we recommend ear plugs for every DJ — even regular, run-of-the-mill ear plugs can make a world of difference to your long-term hearing health. Used regularly, ear plugs will provide a barrier between your ear canal and the louder sounds in the club, protecting your hearing at each and every gig.

Miniature ear plugs and earmuffs for the little rocker in your life

Even kids need hearing protection! We have loads of stylish earmuffs to protect kids’ hearing at concerts and other noisy events. For example, the Alpine Muffy range is specifically designed for kids — recommended for kids aged two and over, these earmuffs fit snugly over their ears to protect them from overstimulation and hearing damage.

For babies and toddlers, noise can be harmful sooner than you think. If you’re planning on taking your baby to an event, we recommend investing in the Alpine Muffy Baby range. Rather than a full headset, these earmuffs are secured to your baby’s head with an adjustable elastic strap. The earmuffs themselves are ideally sized for babies and toddlers, protecting their hearing in all kinds of scenarios.

Your kids don’t have to miss out on the music — check out Alpine’s kid's range of hearing protection online or in-store with Musos Corner.

FAQs about hearing protection and ear plugs in Australia

  • Do I need ear plugs and earmuffs for work?
Depending on what industry you’re in. Under the Work Health and Safety Act, workers in industries involving hazardous noise must take reasonable care for their own health and safety — considering musicians, roadies and members of the stage crew can be exposed to 120 to 140dB during a gig, industry approved PPE (personal protective equipment) may be required.
Ear plugs and earmuffs are the most common kinds of PPE and usually meet Australian Standards for WHS. Please read product descriptions for more information about hearing protection and limits. Alternatively, get in touch with our team for more recommendations and advice.
  • What other scenarios require ear plugs and earmuffs?
Ear plugs and earmuffs can be useful in a huge range of situations and scenarios like gigs, parades, parties, firework displays, motor races, national/international flights and construction sites. You can even use them to block out noise while you sleep or stay focused at home, school or work.
  • Can I pick up my new ear plugs/earmuffs in-store?
Absolutely. We offer a free click and collect service so you can pay online and come and pick up your gear in-store. We’ll send you an email or text when your items are ready to pick up. Alternatively, you can come and shop in-store — we’ve got loads of hearing protection products on display.
  • Can I return my ear plugs or earmuffs?
Unfortunately, we cannot accept returns for items that have been exposed to biological matter, so we cannot offer returns and refunds for ear plugs and earmuffs. If your items are faulty or not performing at the level specified in the product description, please contact our sales team for more information about a replacement.
  • How do I pay?
We accept VISA, Mastercard and American Express — plus, you can pay via PayPal or Zippay. We also offer lay-buy options so you can pay your items off and pick them up later — we just require a 20% deposit for in-store purchases and 50% for online orders.
