How to choose an acoustic guitar amplifier

When choosing an acoustic amp, it’s crucial to understand that acoustic and electric guitar amps are built differently. Acoustic amps are designed to reproduce the natural sound of an acoustic guitar as cleanly as possible — no special effects, no distortion, nothing too fancy.

Electric guitars, on the other hand, are built to handle compression and distortion, delivering a unique kind of sound. You could plug an acoustic guitar into an electric guitar amp, but it’s not going to hit quite as nicely as an acoustic amp.

If you’re umming and ahhing about which amp to choose, we’ve got you covered. Here are some tips for choosing an acoustic guitar amplifier.

  • Make sure you’ve got a good guitar. All amps have their own unique set of specs e.g. onboard effects, inputs and wattage. If you want to achieve next-level amplified sound from your acoustic guitar amp, you should start with a quality acoustic-electric guitar because even if your amp has built-in effects, it can only do so much with a dull sound.
  • Consider the amp’s purpose. Where are you planning to play your guitar? Are you practising at home, jamming in your garage or playing live gigs? Are the gigs indoors or outdoors? With so many acoustic amps available on the market, you have to consider how and where you’ll be using them.

For example, if you’re practising at home, consider opting for a small 10-40 watt amp with a single speaker. If you’re playing an intimate gig, you might only need a 20-watt amp with multiple inputs so you can plug in your mic. If you’re busking, opt for a portable, battery-powered amp with at least 60 watts of power.
  • Look at the amp’s features. Consider what kind of add-ons and effects you’ll need from your amp e.g. multiple inputs, multiple channels, feedback control (over 20 watts) and onboard effects. Acoustic amps often come with basic onboard effects like reverb and chorus but you can always add more effects with pedals and processors

FAQs about acoustic amps

  • Why do I need an acoustic amp at home?
An acoustic amp for practising at home might seem like overkill but there are actually a lot of benefits to practising with an amp. For one, you can hear yourself better and you can fine-tune your skills with more finesse. Plus, if you’ve never used an amp before, it’s a great way to boost your confidence and get used to the concept of playing on an amp… maybe even for a crowd.
  • What kind of acoustic amp do you recommend for busking?
If you want to take your tunes to the streets, there’s one crucial element you need to look out for — portability. There’s no doubt you’ll be lugging an amp around with you to different locations, so you need something lightweight and portable to make travel simpler.

We also recommend opting for a lower-powered, battery-powered amp because for the most part, you’re not going to have any electrical outlets available to you in public. A high-powered amp will drain the batteries too quickly, so most busking amps are low-powered while still delivering around 60 watts. Check out our range of busking amps here!
  • Does it matter what amp I choose?
Yes! Acoustic amps are specifically designed to reproduce the sound of your acoustic guitar as cleanly and accurately as possible. While you can plug your acoustic guitar into an electric guitar amp, you won’t get the same rich, natural sound that you would from an acoustic amp.
  • What brands do you stock?
We stock some of the best brands in the business — AER, Roland, Fender, Ibanez, Acus, Behringer, Boss, TC Electronic, Ashdown and Bugera.
  • What famous musos have used acoustic amps?
If you’re looking for some inspiration, musicians like Larry Graham (Sly and the Family Stone), Robbie Krieger (The Doors), John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) and John McVie (Fleetwood Mac) all used acoustic amps in their time. Just listen to some of their tracks — you can hear the difference an acoustic amp makes to their music.
  • Do I qualify for free shipping?
We offer free shipping on orders over $199 — if your order doesn’t meet the threshold, you can calculate shipping during the check-out process. Our freight calculator will provide an instant quote based on your location and the weight of the product.
