Plumes: A Tube Screamer style transparent overdrive pedal, but much more of its own thing than just a TS808 clone.

One of the most important features of the Plumes® Small Signal Shredder is that Jamie used it on his own pedalboard for a long time before releasing it for everyone to use. Not to say that he hasn’t done that with other EarthQuaker designs, because he most certainly has. But this is the case of a designer who wasn’t necessarily crazy about a specific circuit, created something that he enjoyed using, and brought the whole thing to another level for everyone else. The use on stage and at band practice is where one can really hear what a pedal is lacking, and which attributes rise to the top. This obsession with testing and refining a circuit into something special is what makes Plumes stand alone in a vast sea of Tube Screamer-style transparent overdrives.

Controls

Plumes-Controls.jpg

1. Level: This controls the output volume.

2. Gain: This controls the amount of drive.

3. Tone: More bass to the left, more middles in the middle and more treble to the right.

4. Clipping Modes (3-Way Toggle):

1. Symmetrical LED clipping - More Crunch and Compression.

2. No clipping - Wide open OpAmp drive for clean boost.

3. Asymmetrical silicon diode clipping - More transparency with a loose feel.

Design Notes

Plumes is an overdrive based around that classically overdone tube-like circuit you all know, and amps crave. While this particular circuit has been done to death, we here at EarthQuaker Devices brand of special effects pedals think the Plumes offers an original take on the old, tired dead horse everyone loves to beat on. You can’t get enough of it, so we are giving you some more. Doctor’s orders and what not….

For starters, we’ve done away with the sacred 4558 IC and the classic BJT transistor buffers and replaced them with JFET operational amplifiers and raised the input impedance to nearly 10 megaohms! This offers lower noise, better signal integrity and more chime in the high end. We power this OpAmp by taking the 9v input and internally converting it to +/- 9v to give it more headroom. The end result is a more three-dimensional tone with added clarity that really pushes a nice tube amp over the edge. You might notice how those badass leads you’re always ripping will blast over those awful, no good cymbals your drummer is constantly bashing around on. It sounds like diamonds…a million f**king diamonds!

We’ve also added three different clipping options for your consideration. Mode 1 is symmetrical clipping utilizing a pair of light emitting diodes. This is the crunchiest setting the Plumes has to offer. When played through a clean amp, it’ll deliver a reasonable facsimile of that classic black and gold British valve amp tone. If you already set your amp dirty, using this mode will make it filthy. Mode 2 is clean boost mode. This eliminates the soft clipping diodes altogether and leaves you with straight OpAmp drive. This is perfect for pushing your clean tone out in front or driving the preamp of an already overdriven amp into tasteful breakup territory. Mode 3 is an asymmetrical silicon diode arrangement similar to the stock screamer but with more output and clean clarity; the tone some people describe as “transparent”. It’s almost as if your clean tone is blended in with a slightly less clean tone, ya know? Using this mode gives a warmer low-end response and lower output. It’s less hard on your amp and your ears. It’s a classic pleasant tone the whole band can enjoy.

Not enough for you? We’ve also improved the way the classic tone control operates while still leaving it familiar enough to keep you warm and comfortable. It’s still a safe space, no worries in here. It’s now useful through the whole range. The low end is big and clear, and the high end is bright and cutting without killing the mids. Just the right amount of tonal tickling to excite those ear drums yet still give that familiar mid-heavy drive.

The first thing you will notice about Plumes is that it is loud. Loud but not noisy. This is a very “deliberate” sounding pedal. You will hear your pickups and playing. You will get a big result without a lot of knob turning or maxing out the controls. In fact, Plumes is a Tube Screamer-style pedal with a clarity and presence that I have never really experienced before. The components in Plumes were chosen to provide reliability and a more “audio grade” experience overall. Stepping on Plumes is like taking a packing blanket off your speaker. That’s pretty much what it sounds like to me. And if you don’t like things too overdriven, you can still benefit from Plumes’ hi-fi tonality.

This is a very cost-effective and simple way to turn a lifeless budget guitar into a sparkle machine. The tone control is pretty much worth the price of admission for me. Turn it clockwise past noon to wake up a boring sounding or low-output guitar. Turn it counterclockwise to tame pickups that you may have deemed too bright in the past. Use it on your bass pedalboard for great grit, with minimal low-end loss. Having the ability to use momentary switching via Flexi-Switch® Technology comes in handy when experimenting with song parts. Plumes is a great way to own a quality piece of gear, that is hand made in the USA by people who love what they do.

Plumes-Overdrive-Process.jpg
Mode 1 is LED clipping, and by far the raunchiest overdrive. The gain control starts to wake up at about 1 o’clock with colder single coil pickups. Before that, it stays relatively tame. You can hear the full body that is added to your signal, even with gain in the lower settings. This is the mode you will use if you want to get great overdrive but aren’t necessarily using a high-gain amp. If you do use this mode with a high-gain amp with five or more gain stages, you can achieve an almost death metal hotness, with an added dimension and clarity. Let’s not forget the TONE control on Plumes, which never gets muddy, even all the way cut. I find this mode most useful for finely sculpting my overdrive. Don’t turn those knobs too fast kids, or you might miss a valuable setting!

Mode 2 is full open Op Amp drive a.k.a. Clean Boost mode. You can indeed use Plumes Small Signal Shredder as a transparent boost with the added benefit of a tone control that is useable throughout the entire range. Use this mode to make your less overdriven sound stand out, right up front, or to drive an additional overdrive/fuzz pedal into madness. I personally love using this mode with my high-output humbuckers, and a high-gain amp with the preamp VERY hot. I turn the gain on Plumes all the way down! The added complexity and articulation in my distortion is unbeatable. It sounds VERY aggressive and my whole set up sounds lame when I switch the pedal off. This is a trick that makes your palm muting stand out instead of turning to mush or getting trampled by the rest of the band. This mode is also great for pushing an “on the verge” not-so-perfectly clean sound into true overdrive with a tube amp, without changing the character of your tone too much.

Mode 3 is the one that basically allows you to have Plumes behave like a Tube Screamer, except for the fact that you cannot make it sound muffled. This is the mode you can jump to if you already love midrange-focused transparent overdrives. You get to hear exactly what makes your playing style unique, the voice of your pickups, amp, and speaker choice. You also get to slowly dial in the appropriate amount of distortion to mix with your clean sound. One never overpowers the other. You are mixing in overdrive with what you already have, not masking your signal with overdrive. TS808 Tube Screamer pedals are known for this trait. People have been asking how this pedal differs from Dunes or Palisades, and this is the easiest way to explain it…no setting on Dunes or Palisades can provide what Mode 3 on Plumes does.

The hidden versatility within Plumes is found by experimenting with the three modes and seeing how much you can get out of it with the LEAST gain possible. Then, adding in a bit more gain slowly to really hear what it does for your entire situation. I recommend setting your amp’s EQ flat (treble, mid, and bass controls all at noon), getting a sound you like with the pedal’s controls, and then fine tuning your amp around how Plumes sounds. After you play for a while, turn off Plumes and hear the difference. You may never turn it off again.

Flexi-Switch® Technology

This device features Flexi-Switch® Technology! This relay-based, true bypass switching style allows you to simultaneously use momentary and latching style switching.

  • For standard latching operation, tap the footswitch once to activate the effect and then tap again to bypass.

  • For momentary operation, hold the footswitch down for as long as you’d like to use the effect. Once you release the switch the effect will be bypassed.

Since the switching is relay based, it requires power to pass signal.

Power

This device takes a standard 9 volt DC power supply with a 2.1mm negative center barrel. We always recommend pedal-specific, transformer-isolated wall-wart power supplies or multiple isolated-output supplies. Pedals will make extra noise if there is ripple or unclean power. Switching-type power supplies, daisy chains and non-pedal specific power supplies do not filter dirty power as well and let through unwanted noise. DO NOT RUN AT HIGHER VOLTAGES!

Of course! Unlike some stores, we do not charge for you to pick up in store. We are open 7 days for your convenience, but please give us a date and time of pick up so we can make sure your goods are ready. IF you are not home, the driver will leave a card in your mail box so you can pick-up from the local depot/post office or arrange a re-delivery.
We have found it to be much quicker & easier to have all items sent to a business address where someone will be present.

Can I ask for the courier to leave the goods at my door?
Whilst it Is possible, we highly recommend that you do not do it. All freight warranty & insurance will be void. Only do so at your own risk, if someone steals it, Musos Corner & The freight company will not be held accountable.
If you will not be able to take the delivery, it might be worth asking a friend or neighbour to take delivery of it for you.

What if it appears my goods have been freight damaged?
Please check all items before signing for them! This is very important. Do not sign for an item that appears damaged, to sign for them means "Signed for in good working order" and subsequently is out of the couriers hands, and voids insurance. If this was not possible, there can be a 24 Hour window to try and claim insurance, please contact us & the courier immediately. This only applies to orders that have paid for Insurance & are sent via courier.

Can the courier or delivery person call me prior to delivery?
Unfortunately as often as we request this, we get denied as many times. No courier or Australia post worker will call you prior to delivery despite any bribes we may try and offer.
If you select courier we will send you a tracking number which you can use to find out an estimated time of arrival for your goods, or alternatively have it sent to a business address.

Can I have my goods delivered on the weekend or after hours?
Unfortunately this is not possible at the current point in time, however you are welcome to pickup in store late night Thursday or on weekends from our Newcastle store. Please contact us to set a pickup time.

Send to a PO BOX?
We cannot ship guitars to a PO BOX under any circumstances. Australia Post will not accept deliveries over 105cm LCM, we cannot change their policy.
