Steinberg AXR4T Thunderbolt Audio Interface

THE NEXT-GENERATION AUDIO INTERFACE WITH PREMIUM SOUND QUALITY

With the AXR4, Steinberg sets a new standard in audio interfaces for studios, producers and professional musicians. Featuring connectivity and facilities aimed at professional-level recording, including 32-bit integer resolution and a sample rate of up to 384 kHz, this premium audio interface significantly raises the bar. The hybrid mic preamps with Rupert Neve Designs SILK emulation add exceptional tonal control, while SSPLL guarantees ultra-low jitter. The AXR4 ensures universal excellence for all recording applications.

FEATURES

32-bit integer/384 kHz

The industry-leading converters used in the AXR4 series deliver exceptional quality audio, thanks to a maximum sampling rate of 384 kHz with 32-bit resolution. High-quality conversion is a crucial first step to a great audio production and, with the AXR4 interfaces, we have set a new standard. They include 32-bit integer converters, which not only allow for a significantly higher dynamic range, but also capture every nuance and detail of recorded signals in the most precise, transparent manner. We have raised the bar further with a sample rate of up to 384 kHz, allowing the reproduction of transients, the stereo image and the recording environment to be much more detailed, while the anti-aliasing filter can be set at a level where it won’t be heard.

AXR hybrid mic preamps

The AXR4 features extraordinarily natural-sounding hybrid microphone preamps, developed by Yamaha, which are available on all front input channels. Developed as part of Yamaha’s “Natural Sound” philosophy, the choice of components, mechanical construction, circuit layout, power supply and grounding were all painstakingly evaluated and refined in the AXR4. The preamps, which also feature in Yamaha’s state-of-the-art digital mixers, combine clean, natural analog sound with Rupert Neve Designs SILK processing. This precisely modeled emulation of high-end analog devices by a true legend of studio hardware is incorporated into the AXR4 using original Yamaha VCM (Virtual Circuitry Modeling) technology.

Rupert Neve Designs SILK

Recording engineers have used microphone preamps designed by the legendary Rupert Neve for many years, giving their sound a remarkably musical touch of natural compression and saturation. The precisely modeled Rupert Neve Designs SILK processing in the AXR4’s hybrid microphone preamplifiers adds an exquisite sonic quality, giving sounds that can get lost in the mix new life and intensity. There are two choices of SILK processing; Red for sparkling energy, and Blue for solidity and power. A continuously variable Texture control also shapes the harmonic components to best suit the sound source. Additionally, SILK benefits the way that channel EQ and reverb plug-ins affect the sound. It can be used with all mic inputs, either on specific channels or to all for adding depth and perspective to the overall mix.

Compatible with all major audio software

The AXR4 is compatible with all major audio editing, mastering, and music production software supporting the ASIO, Core Audio or WDM (2-ch) standard, providing a fully integrated, DSP-based monitoring setup wherever you are and with whichever DAW you use. When using Cubase, all of the advanced latency-free monitoring capabilities are fully integrated into the Cubase GUI by True Integrated Monitoring technology. You can choose to control the monitoring capabilities either from Cubase or the dspMixFx application. When the interface is used with any other audio software, the dspMixFx AXR mixing application allows full control of all effects and settings.

Digital connection

Alongside its array of XLR and 6.3mm audio connections, the AXR4 features digital in/out ports which allow you to connect it (via optical cable) to digital audio devices. Switchable between ADAT and S/PDIF format, the Optical A and Optical B connectors allow you to expand the AXR4 with up to eight extra I/O channels each. In addition, the Optical B digital port can be switched to AES/EBU for connecting via a DB25-type connector.

Word clock with SSPLL jitter reduction technology

The AXR4 uses robust SSPLL™ (Super Suppression Phase Locked Loop) technology, currently the most advanced technology for minimizing audio band jitter and vital when creating a high-quality, professional audio network. As more devices with clocks are added to an audio system, each clock beats against the others, creating audio band jitter. The traditional solution is to add expensive master clocks but, with audio equipment becoming more affordable, some manufacturers use cheap clock solutions which can lead to equipment not working properly. SSPLL performs at the same level as professional clocking products, making all connected equipment work reliably and virtually jitter-free.

Thunderbolt 2 with low latency (AXR4T)

By using Thunderbolt 2 technology, the AXR4T delivers very low latency and high CPU efficiency, a high number of I/Os and two system expansion ports. It allows up to three units to be daisy-chained, for a total of 84 inputs and 72 outputs, sufficient for most recording applications. The AXR4T is compatible with Macintosh computers using either Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt 3 (via an adapter). For Windows computers a Thunderbolt 3 port and adapter is needed.

SuperSpeed USB 3.1 with USB Type-C (AXR4U)

The AXR4U features the USB 3.1 Gen 1 SuperSpeed standard, which provides fast, reliable and seamless connectivity to Mac and PC computers via a USB Type-C connector. Together with the reduced latency of our newly designed SSP3 chip and latest, most refined drivers, the AXR4 gives you peace of mind wherever you are recording. By being compatible with the USB 2.0 standard*, you can also enjoy the benefits of reduced latency with computers that do not provide a USB 3 connection. There is a channel limitation at 176.4 kHz or higher sample rate when connecting AXR4U to PC via USB 2.0 standard.

Included Software

dspMixFx AXR mixing application

Thanks to the built-in DSP chips including Yamaha’s custom-designed DSPX chip and dspMixFx AXR software, the AXR4 provides zero-latency monitoring with effects for every DAW, with straightforward control of all routings and settings. The dspMixFx AXR technology provides not only latency-free monitoring but also the acclaimed Sweet Spot Morphing Channel Strip, REV-X reverb and the Vintage Classics Compressor VCM 276 and VCM EQ601. When using Cubase, all of the advanced monitoring capabilities are fully integrated into the application’s GUI by True Integrated Monitoring technology.

Included Effects

Yamaha Vintage Classic Compressor 276

The 276 is a stereo compressor that has enhanced numerous professional productions. Delivering classic-style compression, based on the punch and fatness of the finest studio hardware, the Compressor 276 is the perfect choice for both acoustic instruments and vocals. Yamaha’s Virtual Circuitry Modeling (VCM) technology enables you to experience the unique response and frequency characteristics of a 1970s analog masterpiece.

Yamaha Vintage Classic EQ 601

The EQ 601 combines the sound of a classic 1970s equalizer with a wide range of practical functions. With six fully parametric bands, frequencies can be adjusted with high precision. The lower and upper bands include shelving filters, while the four mid bands feature peaking filters, precisely reproducing the boost and cut frequency response of vintage analog equipment. The Drive mode allows you to recreate the analog distortion characteristics of the original unit in your modern DAW.

REV-X reverb

The REV-X built into the AXR4 is a complex reverb algorithm developed by Yamaha. It is renowned for its high-density, richly reverberant sound quality, with smooth attenuation, spread and depth that work together to enhance the original, dry sound. REV-X features three types of reverb effects: Hall, Room and Plate, with reverb time and level controls. REV-X is a truly classic reverb effect, perfect for bringing a professional sheen to every recording.

Sweet Spot Morphing Channel Strip

The Sweet Spot Morphing Channel Strip consists of a sidechain-enabled compressor and a three-band parametric equalizer. Both compressor and EQ were developed to attain a highly musical sound. Its featured morph knob smoothly allows you to morph through both EQ and compression settings in combination in order for you to come up with the ideal sound by using one single control element.

Leading-edge Virtual Circuitry Modeling

VCM was developed by an engineering group led by Toshifumi Kunimoto (aka Dr. K), who was also responsible for the first physical modeling synthesizers, VL1 and VP1. VCM enables an ultra-realistic digital reproduction of individual components in analog circuits, such as resistors and capacitors. Besides modeling the functionality of a circuit and the interaction between single components, VCM focuses on an unprecedented musical simulation of analog sound qualities, including typical characteristics like saturation and non-linearity - subtleties that simple digital simulations cannot capture.
Each effect is carefully analyzed by some of the best ears in the business and tweaked to provide the best-sounding results in today’s pro sound environment. Breathtakingly accurate, yet highly musical - the VCM technology is the most straightforward approach to analog sound modeling and is now available in the SILK processor on AXR4 hybrid mic preamps and EQ 601 and Compressor 276 both available onboard DSP and Advanced FX Suite plug-in bundle in AXR4.

Steinberg at Musos Corner

Musos Corner is proud to be an authorised retailer of Steinberg digital audio workstations (DAW) and recording interfaces.

Steinberg is based in Hamburg, Germany and was founded in 1984.

After designing MIDI sequencing programs for the Commodore 64 and Atari computer systems, Steinberg’s Cubase was released in 1989 for Atari and was soon followed by Mac and PC editions.

Audio recording was added to Cubase’s MIDI functionality in 1992 making the program one of the longest serving and most popular systems for recording of all time.

Steinberg also developed industry standard protocols such as Virtual Studio Technology (VST) allowing for the universal use of virtual instruments and Audio Stream Input Output (ASIO) which ensures the latency between the audio drivers and software is kept to a minimum.

Today Steinberg is owned by Yamaha and has expanded its range to include a wide range of interfaces with the UR series being one of Musos Corner’s best sellers.

Steinberg has also expanded it's software over time to include Nuendo (broadcast recording), Dorico (Scoring) Wavelab (mastering) as well as an IOS and Android App for portable devices (Cubasis).

Musos Corner highly recommends Steinberg software and audio interfaces and if we don’t have your dream Steinberg  product in stock or listed online please contact us at Musos Corner today.

Valid ID will be required for picking up goods that have been paid for online or over the phone.

What if I am not home for the delivery?
IF you are not home, the driver will leave a card in your mail box so you can pick-up from the local depot/post office or arrange a re-delivery.
We have found it to be much quicker & easier to have all items sent to a business address where someone will be present.

Can I ask for the courier to leave the goods at my door?
Whilst it Is possible, we highly recommend that you do not do it. All freight warranty & insurance will be void. Only do so at your own risk, if someone steals it, Musos Corner & The freight company will not be held accountable.
If you will not be able to take the delivery, it might be worth asking a friend or neighbour to take delivery of it for you.

What if it appears my goods have been freight damaged?
Please check all items before signing for them! This is very important. Do not sign for an item that appears damaged, to sign for them means "Signed for in good working order" and subsequently is out of the couriers hands, and voids insurance. If this was not possible, there can be a 24 Hour window to try and claim insurance, please contact us & the courier immediately. This only applies to orders that have paid for Insurance & are sent via courier.

Can the courier or delivery person call me prior to delivery?
Unfortunately as often as we request this, we get denied as many times. No courier or Australia post worker will call you prior to delivery despite any bribes we may try and offer.
If you select courier we will send you a tracking number which you can use to find out an estimated time of arrival for your goods, or alternatively have it sent to a business address.

Can I have my goods delivered on the weekend or after hours?
Unfortunately this is not possible at the current point in time, however you are welcome to pickup in store late night Thursday or on weekends from our Newcastle store. Please contact us to set a pickup time.

Send to a PO BOX?
We cannot ship guitars to a PO BOX under any circumstances. Australia Post will not accept deliveries over 105cm LCM, we cannot change their policy.
